posted by chia chong yu This is a article by Channel News Asia titled Singaporeans need to change their mindset towards narruage, According to the artictle, a change in mindset is needed in the attitude of Singaporeans towards marriage, said Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Major General (NS) Chan Chun Sing. In my opinion, the fact that fewer people are getting married in Singapore is truly a sad thing, for Singapore needs more native people to provide for their own talents, rather than having to hire foreign talents. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1137193/1/.html
He added that while the government can drive a pro-family environment, it is up to the people to believe in the "intangible ideals" of marriage.
He said this at the Family Day Out Carnival at this year's National Family Celebrations, which saw more youth participation.
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who was also at the event, said employers should also play a part by putting in place pro-family policies at the workplace. He also highlighted the role of community and commercial providers in offering family support services.
Lim Soon Hock, Co-Chairperson of the National Family Celebrations organising committee, said: "We are seeing a lot of youths participating in this family day out. And they're here with their families, with their grandparents. Some of them are even with their younger siblings.
"So I think in terms of getting our youth engaged in the family scene and as key stakeholders for future families, I'm particularly delighted."
It is a sign of hope amidst a recent gloomy statistic that fewer people are getting married. While the government promises to play its part in helping more Singaporeans settle down in families, it also boils down to attitudes.
As the month-long celebrations draw to a close, the National Family Celebrations organising committee hopes the younger generation will continue to recognise the roles they play in their families.
posted by chia chong yu This is an article by Channel News Asia titled Fastest Durian Eater in Singapore The Fastest Durian Eating Challenge produced Singapore's fastest durian eater, who shockingly ate 321 grammes of durian in under one minute. In my opinion, this article shows that people can be famous for the most unusual things, even one as unusual as eating the king of fruits as fast as possible. It also shows that one should never give up when achieving his dream, who knows, perhaps you might end up having your name down in the book of records too!
Thirty-four-year-old Aundrey Bosco Francis beat nine other finalists at the event that was held at Jurong Point.
Each finalist was given under one minute to gobble down the king of fruits.
The winner was decided by the weight of durian flesh consumed by the end of the time limit.
Aundrey’s name will be written down in the Singapore Book of Records for the most durians eaten in one minute.
The Fastest Durian Eating Challenge is also part of the 'Fast is Amazing' competition series launched by SingTel to bring the racing action closer to Singaporeans.

posted by chia chong yu An article by Channel News Asia titled “Rare dengue hits Marsiling” A rarely-seen type of dengue has hit the Marsiling area with more than 60 cases reported. Singaporeans should teach their domestic workers to watch out for potential breeding habitats in their homes and clear them out to be safe. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1137320/1/.html
The National Environment Agency (NEA) stated that residents currently have no immunity at all against the disease. But it also added that the rest of the island should remain calm for there is no sign of the disease spreading.
NEA has since stepped up control measures such as dispatching 70 officers to carry out mass operations to destroy breeding habitats.
The agency has also roped in various partners, including the Sembawang Town Council and the National Parks Board to get rid of larvae in the area.
A Marsiling resident stated that he welcomed the increased monitoring.
NEA is also advising residents to be alert to any potential mosquito breeding areas in their homes.
The agency has also stated that enforcement action will be taken against anybody found breeding the mosquitoes.
In my opinion, this article shows that we should always be stay vigilant and look out for potential breeding places for mosquitoes, they will always be a danger to our community and this incident has proven once again that mosquitoes are one of the biggest problems that Singapore faces.
should not be easily forgiven if he or she was actually caught red-handed. This is because I believe that the culprit has intentionally caused much inconvenience and unhappiness among the drivers. I felt that the culprit should pay for his or her price for executing such pranks. Hence, I think a stronger fine was then reasonable.
Based on the article, ‘What migrant workers love about Singapore’ shows that migrant workers felt ease being around Singapore as they have not faced issues like biasedness among Singaporeans. If such issues really happen, it may not only cause conflicts but also bring about unhappiness to people living in the same state. Hence, events were organised by Migrant Workers Centre to promote harmony and for its people to receive differences through integration.

POSTED BY: Joling Chiong Hsiao Yuan A newborn baby boy was found buried alive with a trash bag twisted like a rope around his neck in a rooftop garden of a Eunos Crescent block. Retiree Tay Kim Sia, 60, was having a smoke atop multi-storey carpark Block 31A on Monday when he heard a mewing noise coming from the garden. To his horror, he found a babyburied in a shallow grave. The infant's mouth was stuffed with mud and dried leaves, and he still had his umbilical cord attached. The baby has since been taken to the KK women's and children's hospital and is in stable condition. The police are trying to track down the baby's next of kin. Tay said that he was smoking at the sixth-floor garden when he heard soft mews. So,he hopped onto the waist-high planter and dug the baby out with his bare hands. He then brought the baby into the Tembusu Senior Activity Centre on the same floor where the latter was cleaned and had the trash bag around his neck removed. The senior citizens in the centre described the wide-eyed baby as dark-skinned, beautiful and healthy. It was also noted that he looked barely a few hours old. Droplets of blood were discovered at a nearby stairwell, but it is not known if the baby was delivered there. Police found some bloodied clothes, bunched up and hidden in the bushes just a few metres away from where the newborn was found. Those found guilty of child abandonment can be jailed up to seven years and fined. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_658882.html
baby found buried alive
This was an article post on Channelnewsasia on 24 June 2011. It was an article titled: Thai girl's accident: Dad asks more questions. More information about the article, a girl from Thailand, lost her legs after falling onto the MRT track and was hit by a train at Ang Mo Kio MRT station. What really attracted my attention to this article was that the father of the victim, thought the money given to him by SMRT was compensation. SMRT given the father $10,000 as initial financial support and $5,000 out of goodwill. It was out of goodwill that SMRT donated money to him. Many others also contributed to the girl's hospital fees and donated huge amounts of money to her. It was all out of goodwill. Instead of accepting them with thanks, the father rejected $5,000 from the $15,000 given to him, and filed a lawsuit against SMRT claiming $3.4Million in damages. He viewed the $10,000 given to him as a very small amount compared to how his daughter "lost her legs and her future".
I felt disgusted and angry against the father of the victim. I agree that the amount given by SMRT is little but it was out of goodwill. Whatever happened to his daughter was an accident, not intentional. Disgusted because the father seemed to be greedy and unreasonable. Angry because the daughter did not talk to her father about it and explain that it was an accident. SMRT never said that it has to be responsible for the accidents that happen in their stations. So on what grounds can the father sue SMRT?

Smokers are thinner than those who don't smoke
This is an article i found on Channel NewsAsia website. It is regarding about a research of how exactly nicotine acts as an appetite suppressant in the brain, a finding that could one day help in the fight against obesity. Smokers tend to be thinner than people who don't smoke, and the study led by Yale University and published in the journal Science describes how nicotine activates certain neurons in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. Those neurons tell the body when it's had enough to eat, according to senior author Marina Picciotto, a professor of neurobiology and pharmacology at Yale. Researchers made the discovery by studying mice, but are hopeful that similar receptors can be isolated in humans, too. A research scientist in Picciotto's lab was studying nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which are on the surface of neurons, to see if an experimental drug to treat depression would have any effect. A series of experiments show that the drug could turn on a certain nicotine receptor which then told a subset of neurons in the hypothalamus- called pro- opiomelanocortin or POMC cells- that dinner time was over. In my opinion, not all smokers are thinner than those who don't smoke. There are some fat smokers as well, not in order to lose weight.
This is an article I found on AsiaOne. It is about a female jiulinghou in China trying to sell her virginity for a iPhone 4. She tweeted on Weibo that it is her "dream to own a iPhone 4 but her father won't let her get one." She then decided to sleep with someone in exchange for the mobile phone. The China teen has posted a picture of herself along with other basic information saying she is willing to "sell" her virginity to anyone that buys her a iPhone 4." Her post has received negative feedback, pointing out that a phone is not worth what she giving in exchange. Others think that someone is using her account and pulling a malicious on the girl. It is almost like the case of what happened to the Chinese boy who sold his kidney for iPad 2. In my opinion, I think both the Chinese girl and the Chinese boy are stupid of selling something from their body, that are so precious to them, just to get their desired material goods.
Commuters forced to stand as foreign girl takes up 4 seats with her long legs
This is an article I found on STOMP. It is regarding a foreign girl taking up four MRT seats by sleeping on it. Commuters were forced to stand throughout the duration of their journey, due to her action. She was spotted by STOMPer Nikki during evening, on her MRT ride at around Orchard station. Nikki was annoyed and appalled by her action. It was till then a maid accompany her elderly employer asked her to get up, when she reluctantly gave up two of the seats, yet she still kept two for herself. In my opinion, I feel that the foreign girl was in a wrong by doing such a selfish act of occupying four seats when she only needs one. I also feel that the commuters themselves should be more brave, by telling her to give up her seats to them instead of doing nothing and taking picture.

poly student tried to bribe police
Sumanthiran Selvarajoo was arrested a few hours after he allegedly beat Mr Loo Nam Sheng, 64, with an umbrella. Police said they received a call at 6.40am informing them of an assault at Ang Mo Kio Garden West opposite Ang Mo Kio Community Library. A McDonald's 24-hour restaurant is situated nearby the park. But paramedics, who arrived at the scene at 7.10am, declared the man dead. The park in question has seen its fair share of vice activities. A cleaner at the park, Ng Ah Chue, 69, told The New Paper that the old man that was found murdered used to exercise alone regularly at the park. He said he remembered the man because he didn't exercise on the running track. Instead, he would take off his slippers to walk on the grass. Mr Ng also added that the park is a hang-out for glue sniffers. He said since he started working at the park five years ago, he's seen groups of teens pouring glue into a clear plastic bag and start sniffing. He said they would gather at the park in the afternoon, about 2pm to 3pm, several times a week to sniff glue and get high. Besides the glue-sniffers, he said the park is also used frequently by joggers for their early morning runs. Elderly residents would also go there to exercise or practise taiji from as early as 5am.

Japan doubles plant radiation leak estimate
This news article is regarding about the radiation leak in Fukushima nuclear plant after the tsunami hits Japan. Japan has more than doubled its initial estimate of radiation released from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant after the tsunami. The nation's watchdog, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), now says it believes 770,000 terabecquerels escaped into the atmosphere in the first week -- compared to its earlier estimate of 370,000 terabecquerels. The group's leader, a Tokyo University researcher on human error, Yotaro Hatamura, said at the meeting that "nuclear power has higher energy density and is dangerous. It was a mistake to consider it safe. In my opinion, I think that the NISA didn’t do their jobs well to prevent the incident from getting worse.
