This was a newspaper report on 22 June 2011. Titled: Australian Military hit by 1,000 abuse claims. The article was mostly reporting sexual abuse in the military. Some cases was reported by the victims, some cases reported by family members of the victims, while some cases was reported by people whom had no direct knowledge of the incident they were reporting. This article mainly focused on the comments made by DLA Piper, a law firm in charge of a review conducted on behalf of Defence Minister Stephen Smith. A scandal happened in Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra about a girl who claimed that she was unwittingly broadcast having sex with another cadet in front of classmates.
Allegations made after the review was conducted ranges from relatively minor to very serious matters said DLA Piper. Cases that were aired in Australia media include hushing up of gang rape, brutal bashing and bullying of cadets.
After reading the article, i felt disgusted and angry towards the Australian Military. As military personnel, they are supposed to have a certain level of discipline and not commit such acts within the military. Thankfully Singapore Army do not face the same problem as our Military personnel are more well-trained. I hope the Australian Government step up its efforts to clear up this mess and prevent such cases from happening again.
